HAYWARD -- The upcoming one-way traffic loop through downtown is the subject of a special meeting Thursday.

Hayward staff members will go over plans for the loop at the meeting, which begins at 9 a.m. in Room 2A at City Hall, 777 B St.

Starting the evening of March 15, the city will begin implementing the loop on part of Foothill Boulevard, A Street and Mission Boulevard. Foothill will be one-way north from its intersection with Jackson Street-Mission, and Mission will be one-way south from A Street to Jackson-Foothill. A Street will be one-way west from Foothill to Mission.

Drivers heading south on Foothill will have to turn right at A Street, drive two blocks to Mission Boulevard and then make a left turn to continue south.

Major traffic delays are expected while the loop is being put in place. The switch-over will be wrapped up before the Monday morning commute, city officials say.

The loop is part of the Route 238 Corridor Improvement Project, designed to ease traffic congestion downtown and help commuters move more quickly through town.

The city has set up a website devoted to the loop: www.haywardloop.org.
