SAN JOSE -- A woman who was crossing Monterey Road early Tuesday morning was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver, according to police.
San Jose police responded to Monterey Road and Bellevue Avenue at 1:01 a.m. on a report of a traffic collision, according to San Jose police Officer Albert Morales. Officers found the woman in the roadway and there was no sign of the vehicle that had hit her.
The woman was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 1:50 a.m.
Based on their preliminary investigation, police say the woman was crossing the street near Monterey Road and Bellevue Avenue when she was struck by a dark-colored vehicle similar to a 1996-2000 Honda Civic which did not stop and continued southbound on Monterey Road. The vehicle should have the driver's side ¿mirror missing, a broken front driver's side headlight and possible front windshield damage, according to police.
The victim's identity is being withheld until the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner's office notifies her family. She is the city's fifth traffic fatality of 2013, police said.
Police have not identified the vehicle or its driver.
Detectives from the San Jose Police Department's Vehicular Crimes Unit responded and are handling the case.
