SRV girls win NCS Division I soccer title

  • Megan Turner scored in the 42nd minute to give the San Ramon Valley High girls soccer team a 1-0 win over rival Monte Vista in the North Coast Section Division I championship match on Feb. 23 in Dublin. The top-seeded Wolves earned the program's seventh section title in girls soccer. Monte Vista has six titles. San Ramon Valley (20-0-5) had a banner season, earning East Bay Athletic League, Tri-Valley Classic and NCS titles. Monte Vista charged late in the season and earned a memorable come-from-behind semifinal win over Berkeley in a penalty kick shootout after trailing 2-0 on Feb. 20.

    Wolves top Grizzlies in soccer semifinals

  • The No. 6 seeded San Ramon Valley High boys soccer team took a 2-0 thriller over visiting California in the NCS Division I semifinals on Feb. 20. The Wolves then fell to De La Salle 1-0 on Feb. 23 in the championship game. After a scoreless first half against the Grizzlies, the Wolves scored on a cross by Alex Maestre from the left to Friedler, who hammered it home in the 68th minute. San Ramon Valley upset Richmond in the quarterfinals 3-1 after besting Amador Valley 2-1 in the first round.

    Amador Valley, Monte Vista girls advance

  • The No. 2 seeded Amador Valley and No. 3 Monte Vista girls basketball teams earned wins in the NCS Division I quarterfinals on Feb. 22, with the Dons besting EBAL rival Foothill 47-39 and the Mustangs holding off Santa Rosa 43-37. Monte Vista and Amador Valley met on Feb. 27 in the semifinals, but the result was too late for press time of the weekly edition. The Dons beat the Mustangs twice in EBAL action.

    Livermore fares well in NCS wrestling

  • Livermore High's duo of Tyler Rardon (152 pounds) and Nicolas Lang (145) earned individual championships at the North Coast Section wrestling tournament on Feb. 23 at Newark Memorial High. Granada's Kyle Campiotti (160) earned his first NCS title, and the Matadors' Angel Beltran (138) was second. Amador Valley's Tommy Yozzo (126) was third. Livermore finished seventh in the team standings with 113 points, Amador Valley was 13th and Foothill was 14th.

    Dublin boys, girls advance in NCS play

  • The Dublin High boys and girls basketball teams earned wins in the NCS Division II quarterfinals on Feb. 22. The Gaels girls team prevailed 54-50 over Alameda. Milan Moses scored 22 points to lead Dublin, and Jojuan Carrington hit two free throws with five seconds left to secure the win. The No. 2 Gaels boys team, which earned the Diablo Foothill Athletic League title, routed Concod 86-69.

    Valley Christian girls march on

  • The Valley Christian girls basketball team continued its brilliant season with 55-32 win over Sonoma Academy in the NCS Division V quarterfinals on Feb. 20. Freshman Nina Bessolo and senior Izzy Ayad each had 13 points for the Vikings, who improved to 28-2. They won the Bay Counties League-East Division title with a 12-0 mark. Sophomore Emma Ayad added 12 points.

  • CIF championships, wrestling, March 1-2 -- Five-time NCS team champion De La Salle leads the East Bay contigent to the state tournament in Bakersfield. The Spartans finished fourth the past two years.
