ANTIOCH -- A man's fishing excursion was watered down Wednesday evening after he jumped into the water trying to retrieve his fishing line and briefly prompted fears that he needed to be rescued, authorities said.

Battalion Chief Bob Atlas of the Contra Costa Fire Protection District said they were called out after the man jumped into Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta near 1st Street at West 2nd Street around 6:25 p.m. to get his fishing line.

The man, whose identity Atlas did not know, did not suffer any serious trauma was transported to a local hospital as a precaution so he could be observed overnight, Atlas added.

"He might catch a cold," Atlas said.

The man was able to get out of the water on his own, Atlas said, but he did not have any fish on his line when he came back to shore.
