Teams advance in NCS playoffs Eight local basketball teams advanced to the North Coast Section playoff semifinals on Feb. 27. Results of the semifinals were not available at press time. Both Bishop O'Dowd's boys and girls squad, which are both the No. 1 seeds in Division III, advanced easily into the semifinals. So did the St. Mary's girls, the No. 1 seed in Division IV. They hosted No. 4 seed Piedmont in a semifinal game. The St. Joseph Notre Dame boys, another No. 1 seed, hosted No. 4 seed Head-Royce in a Division V semifinal. The Berkeley girls advanced as a No. 5 seed and traveled to face No. 1 Heritage in a Division I semifinal. No. 3 seed El Cerrito hosted No. 7 San Marin in a Division III boys semifinal.
Pair of one-hitters for baseball teams On Feb. 23, both the El Cerrito and St. Mary's baseball teams had pitchers who hurled one-hitters. In the Gauchos' 11-0 five-inning win over Oakland Tech, Chandler Florez and Cole Florez combined for a one-hitter. In the Panthers' 7-0 victory over Skyline, Kevin Flemer threw five-innings of one-hit ball with 10 strikeouts, and Devin Mahoney finished up the gem with two innings of no-hit ball.
On deck NCS playoff finals, boys and girls basketball, March 1 or March 2, TBA -- Four local teams are No. 1 seeds and were still alive entering the semifinals on Feb. 27. Results of the semifinals were not available at press time. Piedmont at Berkeley, boys tennis, March 5, 3:30 p.m. -- The two teams, which were powers in the Bay Shore Athletic League and Alameda Contra Costa Athletic League respectively, will now compete against each other in the West Alameda County Conference.
Stars of the week Marie Bertholdt, Alameda girls basketball -- Bertholdt opened the NCS Division II playoffs with 27 points, 10 rebounds and seven steals in an 87-49 victory over College Park on Feb. 19. She then had 13 points and 16 rebounds in a 54-50 loss to Dublin on Feb. 22. Matthew Canalin, Encinal boys basketball -- Canalin scored a team-high 17 points, including a trio of 3-pointers, in the Jets' 86-48 loss to Bishop O'Dowd in a NCS Division III quarterfinal game on Feb. 22. Temidayo Yussef, St. Joseph Notre Dame boys basketball -- The junior scored a team-high 20 points in the Pilots' 52-42 victory over Urban-S.F. in an NCS Division V quarterfinal game on Feb. 23. He also produced a game-high 16 points in St. Joseph Notre Dame's 52-36 win over Roseland Prep-Santa Rosa in the first round on Feb. 20. Chanel Chawalit, Albany girls wrestling -- The junior won the 126-pound division at the California Interscholastic Federation Girls State Wrestling Championships on Feb. 23 with a 9-3 win in the finals over Lindhurst's Teasla Lizama. Ryan Diew, Head-Royce boys basketball -- Diew scored a game-high 28 points, including four 3-pointers, in the Jayhawks' 80-64 win over Bay-S.F. in the first round of the NCS Division V playoffs on Feb. 20. Marcellus Pippins, El Cerrito boys basketball -- Pippins scored 15 points and also had five steals and three assists in the Gauchos' 63-43 win over Analy in a Division III quarterfinal game on Feb. 22. Kesy Platt, Piedmont girls soccer -- Platt had 12 saves and a shutout during regulation and overtime before Bishop O'Dowd won the shootout 4-3 in the NCS Division II championship game on Feb. 23. Sinorti Stegman, Berkeley girls wrestling -- Stegman won the 189-pound division at the CIF Girls State Wrestling Championships with a pin of Danielle Pubill of Sacred Heart Cathedral in the second round of the final. Stephanie Zuniga, Bishop O'Dowd girls soccer -- Zuniga produced the eventual game-winning goal during the shootout which the Dragons won 3-2 to break a 0-0 tie and win the NCS Division II championship game on Feb. 23. She also had two assists in a 5-0 semifinal win over St. Mary's on Feb. 20.
