ANTIOCH -- A garbage truck driver found himself a trashy situation Thursday when the front bin of his truck struck overhead power lines, causing his truck to catch fire surrounding homes to lose power.

Antioch police responded to a vehicle accident on Flagstone at Boulder drives about 1 p.m. When officers arrived, they found a garbage truck that struck a power pole.

The driver of the truck told police he was lowering the front dump bin when he accidentally struck the overhead power lines, causing them to arc.

The energized lines caught the truck and all its contents on fire, police said.

Fire crews responded to put out the fire while PG&E crews cut power to approximately 40 homes. Several houses were temporarily evacuated as a precautionary measure, police added.

There were no injuries and no damage to any structures.

Police said it is estimated that power will be restored between 6 and 7 p.m.
