ORINDA -- A 23-year-old Hayward man fleeing police after he was caught trying to burglarize a Danville home was arrested after his vehicle collided with two other cars on Highway 24 just east of the Caldecott Tunnel on Friday morning, authorities said.

A resident on Waingarth Way called police just before 10:30 a.m. to report that she had caught the man inside her home after she heard footsteps. The man ran out, with property from the home, and drove away.

The woman gave police a description of his vehicle, and he was spotted a short time later. He refused to stop for police and led police north on Interstate 680, then west on Highway 24.

Around 10:45 a.m., his car collided with two others near the tunnel. He tried to run, but was captured by Orinda police near the construction zone for the new fourth bore of the tunnel.

Danville officials later identified him as Brian Battles, 23, of Hayward. Police said he would be booked into County Jail in Martinez on suspicion of residential burglary, possession of stolen property and evading a police officer with reckless driving.

Two people suffered minor injuries and were taken to local hospitals for evaluation, according to California Highway Patrol Officer John Fransen. The two right lanes of westbound Highway 24 were blocked for about an hour but were reopened around 11:45 a.m.
