Sheriff's investigators are poring over old missing persons cases after it was determined that human remains found in remote terrain last week in San Mateo County are those of a man, 54 to 64 years old, who died about three years ago.
An examination by a forensic anthropologist also concluded that the bones are those of a Caucasian, and his clothing indicated a large individual -- the pants had a 54-inch waist size and 30-inch inseam, and blue, white and silver Nike Air Max Moto running shoes were a size 12.
The remains were found Feb. 18 by a hiker in an off-trail area of the Purisima Creek Redwoods Open Space Preserve.
He initially found a human skull on the ground about 100 feet from the trail, which runs approximately two miles west of Skyline Boulevard and six miles south of Highway 92. More bones and the clothing turned up about 15 to 20 yards away.
A sheriff's spokeswoman said it did not appear that the person had been buried, and the remains were on a very steep hillside covered in fallen tree branches and leaves.
Detectives are asking for the public's help in identifying the man. Anyone with information about a missing person who matches the description is asked to call 650-363-4363.
