VALLEJO -- A man and woman were found dead inside an apartment Sunday morning of apparent gunshot wounds, Vallejo police said.

Family members called police at 9:23 a.m. to ask for the officers to check on the woman who lived in an apartment unit at 400 Ebbetts Pass Road, in North Vallejo, since they had not heard from her in several days, police said.

The woman and man were roommates and in their early 50s, police added.

While officers were responding to the location, police received calls from witnesses who said they heard a gunshot from the apartment, police said.

The witnesses forced entry into the apartment and found both man and woman dead of apparent gunshot wounds.

Arriving officers then secured the scene. The investigation was still ongoing as of Sunday afternoon at the beige two-story, multiunit building.

The identifications of both people were withheld pending notification of next of kin.

Vallejo police said the circumstances around the deaths are suspicious, and they are awaiting for the autopsy examination results to determine if the deaths were the result of a double homicide, or a murder-suicide.
