PHOENIX -- Oakland second baseman Scott Sizemore caught a break by not catching a break -- his left hand, hit by a pitch Sunday, is bruised but not broken.

Sizemore had X-rays Monday morning that showed no breaks or fracture, which was a huge relief to the veteran A's infielder, who missed all of last season after a spring training leg injury led to ACL surgery.

``I'm extremely relieved,'' Sizemore said upon entering the A's clubhouse Monday morning after the X-rays. ``It's definitely a relief.''

Sizemore played one inning of defense after being hit on the back of his left hand Sunday against the Rockies in Scottsdale, but after that experienced pain when he tried to grip a bat in the dugout.

He will be held out of action at least Monday and Tuesday, and Wednesday is a day off for the entire team. So he's shooting for a Thursday or Friday return to the lineup after the swelling and inflammation subsides.
