Two EBAL wrestlers make CIF quarterfinals

  • Granada High senior Kyle Campiotti, at 160 pounds, and Livermore senior Tyler Rardon, at 152, advanced to the quarterfinals of the California Interscholastic Federation wrestling championships March 1-2 in Bakersfield. Then the two North Coast Section champions each lost their next two matches and barely missed earning a medal. Amador Valley's Tommy Yozzo (126) won his first two matches before falling in the third round and ultimately falling short of the medal rounds. Granada's Angel Beltran (138) won his first match before losing his next two.

    Granada's Olmo stymies Berkeley

  • Granada senior Anthony Olmo tossed a three-hitter with 10 strikeouts and no walks as the Matadors beat visiting Berkeley 1-0 in a nonleague game on March 2. Matt Richards scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth inning.

    Dublin boys fall to Newark Memorial

  • Dublin star JoJo McGlaston scored 20 points in the No. 2 seeded Gaels' 74-60 loss against No. 1 Newark Memorial in the NCS Division II boys basketball playoffs on March 1. The Gaels, who won the Diablo Foothill Athletic League title, walloped three straight opponents to advance to the finals: Northgate (88-65), Concord (88-69), and Mt. Eden (85-53). Dublin earned the No. 1 seed for the NorCal Division II playoffs and will host either El Camino or Rocklin at 7 p.m. on March 9.

    Monte Vista girls win NCS basketball title

  • The No. 3 seeded Monte Vista High girls basketball team upset Bay Valley Athletic League champion Heritage, the No. 1 seed, 50-42 on March 1 at Saint Mary's College to win the NCS Division I title. The Mustangs earned the No. 1 seed for the Northern California Division I playoffs and a bye in the first round. They will face the winner of the March 6 game between Gunn-Palo Alto and Galileo-San Francisco on March 9 at Monte Vista in the quarterfinals. The Mustangs also beat Santa Rosa and East Bay Athletic League nemesis Amador Valley in the NCS playoffs.

  • CIF Northern California playoffs, basketball, March 9, 7 p.m. -- The No. 2 seeded Valley Christian girls squad (30-2), which earned the NCS Division II title, will host either Durham or Pacific Collegiate in the quarterfinals.

  • Queen of the Mountain tournament, softball, March 14-16 -- Several of the East Bay's best teams will converge onto Pleasanton Sports Park (5800 Parkside Dr., Pleasanton) for the three-day tournament.

  • Nina Bessolo, Valley Christian basketball -- The freshman had a team-high 20 points as the Vikings beat International-San Francisco 51-40 on March 1 in the NCS Division V championship game.

  • Austin Hall, Livermore baseball -- The senior pitched 42/3 innings of scoreless relief to get the win in the Cowboys' 9-0 nonleague win over Hayward on March 1, striking out eight and walking three.

  • Anthony Olmo, Granada baseball -- Olmo tossed a three-hitter with 10 strikeouts and no walks as the Matadors blanked Berkeley 1-0 in nonleague play on March 2.

  • Joshua Oh, Dougherty Valley volleyball -- The junior setter had 34 assists to lead the Wildcats past Livermore 3-0 in a nonleague match to open the season

  • Angela Rigo, Monte Vista basketball -- Rigo had 15 points and showed excellent ball-handling skills in the Mustangs' win over Heritage in the NCS Division I title game on March 1.
