A 29-year-old San Rafael man was identified as the Marin County Jail inmate who died in his cell Friday.
Stephen Frazee was discovered unresponsive in his cell at 4:25 p.m. Friday, said Novato police Lt. Jennifer Welch. Workers at the jail and San Rafael Fire Department paramedics performed CPR, but Frazee was declared dead at 4:58 p.m.
Frazee was in custody on a probation violation, Welch said. He was arrested Feb. 25 and had previously been arrested on Feb. 11 on suspicion of battery, possession of a controlled substance and DUI due to alcohol or drugs, according to a national arrest database.
As is the customary protocol when a death occurs while an inmate is in custody, outside agencies -- the Novato Police Department and the Sonoma County Sheriff-Coroner in this case -- are investigating the cause of death.
