ANTIOCH -- Movers and shakers in the city's business and civic circles will be recognized Friday night during the Chamber of Commerce's Inaugural Gala.
The event will be held starting at 6 p.m. at Lone Tree Golf Course and Event Center, 4800 Golf Course Road.
Awards will be given out for the year's top small and large business, youth, nonprofit and citizens who made the most impact both this past year and over the years.
The nominees for citizen of the year award for most impact are Brittney Gougeon, who founded the 4,200-member Facebook-based community advocacy group Take Back Antioch, and the 15-member Fourth of July Committee, which raised $60,000 for a downtown parade celebration, including fireworks, last Independence Day.
The lifetime citizen of the year award nominees are Diane Gibson-Gray, Hans Ho and Gloria Martin. Gibson-Gray sits on the Antioch Unified school board and heads the arts and Cultural Foundation of Antioch, while Ho sits on the Crime Prevention Commission and coordinates the city's neighborhood watch program.
Martin's philanthropic works are described by her nominators as "quietly giving back to her community," including through the Martin Family Foundation, volunteering at the Antioch Historical Society, Rotary projects and the Antioch Education Foundation.
Nominees for the small business award are Higgins and Oakview Memorial Park, Lamothe Cleaners, and Servpro of Antioch. The lone large business nominee is Markstein Beverage Co.
Seven nonprofits are up for an award in that category: An Elderly Wish Foundation, Antioch Historical Society, Brighter Beginnings, El Campanil Theatre, Friends of Animal Services, GFWC Woman's Club of Antioch and Kiwanis Club of the Delta.
The five youth of the year candidates are Briggitte Bolanos and Jorge Barahona of Antioch High School, Jamie Ruiz of Dallas Ranch Middle School, Sydney Dean-Jessie of Deer Valley High School and Erin McDaid of Dozier-Libbey Medical High School.
