Peacocks are alive and well in Contra Costa County, as evidenced by reader responses to a Facebook query posted this week at Facebook.com/BrentwoodNews. Here's a sampling:
Amy Kowalski Walker: I have seen along side of Highway 4 about half mile before Hillcrest exit. There are also the wild turkeys at Lone Tree and James Donlan, we counted 15 one morning.
Cheri Webster: Yes! and I have a couple of pictures. There is a court near where I live off Gentrytown Drive where they live. The owner actually lets them run around the neighborhood, and I drive my grandkids through there because they love looking at them. We also have wild turkeys in Antioch that mostly hang around the homes near James Donlan near Lone Tree Way.
Michelle Nguyen: HA! Here I thought I was seeing things.
Jena Richey: I live on Gentraytown also and they were in my yard last week. Also a pack live at my mother-in-law's house in Brentwood. The babies are hella cute :) and I see some on the old highway by the Posco all the time. They are everywhere.
Melody Anderson-Kostenuk: Yep, here in Oakley. What's going on?
Jon LaBarge: Tons of them in Oakley. They even roost on my neighbor's roofs sometimes.
Daisy C. Templeton: On Hedge Avenue in Brentwood. There is a peacock family. We always see them when we go visit our friend who lives in that neighborhood.
And, yes, they can fly. Check out this video of a peacock in Antioch: www.youtube.com/watch?v=SgDcyZ6Tf-A.
