OAKLAND - A San Francisco man was fatally shot Sunday morning in Old Oakland by gunmen who pursued him in a car, police said.

Police said the 37-year-old man, whose name wasn't released, was driving a car westbound on Eighth Street near Washington Street about 3 a.m. Sunday a block away from police headquarters when he apparently got into a dispute with the occupants of another vehicle.

Police said the occupants of the other vehicle began shooting at the man who drove to the 800 block of Clay Street more than a block away where his car crashed and he was shot at some more.

He was able to run from his car before collapsing near Ninth and Clay streets. He died at the scene.

The suspects fled in their vehicle.

Officer Brad Baker said police don't know yet what the man was doing in Oakland or why he was shot.

The killing was Oakland's 17th homicide of the year. Last year at this time there were 24 homicides in the city.

Police and Crime Stoppers of Oakland are offering up to $10,000 in reward money for information leading to the arrest of the gunmen. Anyone with information may call police at 510-238-3821 or a tip line at 510-773-2805.
