FREMONT -- A pedestrian is dead after being struck by a car in Fremont early Sunday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Officers responded at 12:23 a.m. to a report of a person being hit by a car on Interstate 680, said Officer Ron Simmons.

When officers arrived, they found the person lying in the northbound lanes of I-680 near the Warm Springs exit, Simmons said.

The person, whose name and age were not immediately known, was transported to a local hospital and pronounced dead.

The roadway was reopened to traffic about 1:20 a.m., according to the CHP.
