Marin County authorities are investigating the death of a man whose body was removed from Alpine Lake on Friday afternoon.
The investigation began Wednesday night when Marin Municipal Water District rangers discovered that a car that was parked at the lake in the morning was still there in the evening.
Rangers were unable to find the driver and called the sheriff's department, which identified the car's registered owner and contacted the owner's roommate.
The roommate said the man was missing and had made despondent statements. Sheriff's investigators searched the area with cadaver dogs, and the dogs signaled that there was a body somewhere in the water, said sheriff's Lt. Scott Anderson.
On Friday, a dive team using sonar equipment found the body about 25 feet under water. The coroner's division was trying to confirm the cause and manner of death.
Anderson said there was no initial sign of foul play.
The man's name was not released. His address is in Marin.
