DISCOVERY BAY -- A Stockton man walking in the middle Highway 4 in Discovery Bay died early Monday morning after being struck by a car, a California Highway Patrol officer said.
Police withheld the identity of the 30-year-old man pending notification of family. The collision happened just after 12:15 a.m. in the eastbound direction of Highway 4 just east of Newport Drive, CHP Officer John Fransen said.
The collision forced the closure of all the eastbound lanes on Highway 4 until 2:20 a.m., Fransen said. The man was pronounced dead at the scene, Fransen said.
A 45-year-old Stockton woman driving a blue Kia Rio estimated to be traveling at 55 mph told police the pedestrian appeared in front of her in the middle of the road and that she had no time to avoid him, Fransen said. She did not appear to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol, Fransen said.
"In this case, the pedestrian was at fault, because he was not in an intersection or on a shoulder," Fransen said. "It's a sad one all around."
