OAKLAND -- A 21-year-old Oakland man was arrested Monday afternoon after officers caught him with stolen jewelry when he walked out the front door of the home where he lifted the goods, police said.

Jose Zarate was arrested on suspicion of residential burglary shortly after 1 p.m. in the 800 block of San Leandro Boulevard. He later told investigators he broke into the home because he was "desperate for money," police said.

Police said a witness saw Zarate climb through an open window of the home and went to a nearby restaurant where an employee there called police.

Police surrounded the home and saw the suspect open a window and then close it.

He then walked out the front door and dropped a piece of jewelry to the ground when he saw police, Lt. Rick DeCosta said.

When the resident arrived home, she identified several other pieces of her jewelry that were found on the suspect, police said.

Police dogs from the Alameda County Sheriff's Department helped San Leandro police search the home, but no one else was found inside, police said.
