PITTSBURG -- Following successful gun buyback events in other Bay Area communities, police will give Pittsburg and Bay Point residents cash for their firearms at an event this weekend.
The buyback will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Pittsburg City Hall at 65 Civic Avenue, according to Lt. Ron Raman. Residents will be asked to show proof of residency in either Pittsburg or Bay Point, he said.
Donations will be no-questions-asked, Raman said, and police will not be checking gun owners for warrants.. Police will pay $50 for non-operable weapons, $200 for semi-automatic handguns, shotguns and rifles, and $300 for assault weapons.
Residents can turn in as many firearms as they like, but police will only pay for three per person. They ask that guns be brought unloaded and locked in the trunk of a car.
"Our goal is to be able to effectively take those guns away and destroy them, and ensure that at least those guns won't find their way into violent incidents or a child's hands," Raman said.
