Big inning keys College Prep victory

  • The College Prep softball team scored four runs in the bottom of the third inning and didn't trail after that in an 8-5 win over Head-Royce in a Bay Counties League-East game on March 8. Deanna Necula and Lena Milton both drove in two runs and Lila Jansen slammed a triple for College Prep

    El Cerrito squad takes third in competition

  • The El Cerrito High Mountain Biking Team placed third overall on March 10 in the East Garrison race for the NorCal Mountain Biking League. Among its top-eight finishers were Tyler O'Neal (second, sophomore boys), Molly Radosevich (sixth, varsity girls), Xan Marshland (eighth, jv boys), Maddie Valdez (seventh, freshman girls) and Jessica Mast (eighth, freshman girls).

    Alameda team reaches quarterfinals

  • The Alameda High girls basketball team reached the Division II Northern California regional playoff quarterfinals before a 47-39 loss to Lynbrook-San Jose on March 9. The Hornets opened with a 56-46 win over McNair-Stockton in a first-round game on March 6. DeJa Johnson and Marie Bertholdt both scored 17 points to lead Alameda, and Bertholdt also grabbed 18 rebounds in the win.

  • Northern California regional finals, boys and girls basketball, March 16, Sleep Train Arena-Sacramento and American Canyon High -- Four local teams qualified for the championship games. In the Division V boys championship game, St. Joseph Notre Dame will play Capital Christian-Sacramento at American Canyon at noon. In the Open Division girls championship, Bishop O'Dowd will face St. Mary's Stockton at Sleep Train Arena at 6 p.m. In the Division I girls title game, Berkeley will play Oak Ridge-El Dorado Hills at 2 p.m. at Sleep Train Arena. In the Division IV girls championship, Piedmont will face Salesian at American Canyon at 2 p.m.

  • Ryan Diew, Head-Royce boys basketball -- Diew scored 24 points as the Jayhawks won a Division V boys first-round game in the Open Division Northern California regional playoffs on March 6.

  • Michael Perri, Bishop O'Dowd boys basketball -- Perri scored a team-high 13 points and also grabbed 10 rebounds in the Dragons' 57-42 loss to Modesto Christian in the first round of the Open Division Northern California regional playoffs on March 8.

  • Mikayla Cowling, St. Mary's girls basketball -- Cowling scored a game-high 18 points and also grabbed 11 rebounds and had five steals in a 43-31 win over Sacramento in the first-round of the Open Division Northern California regional playoffs on March 8.

  • Desire Finnie, Berkeley girls basketball -- Finnie had a double-double with 20 points and 13 rebounds as the Yellowjackets defeated McClymonds 54-44 in a Northern California Division I regional quarterfinal game on March 9.

  • Anthony Sullen, El Cerrito boys basketball -- Sullen scored a team-high 14 points in the Gauchos' 69-65 overtime loss to Campolindo in a Northern California Regional Division III quarterfinal game on March 9.

  • Marie Bertholdt, Alameda girls basketball -- Bertholdt scored 17 points and grabbed 18 rebounds in a 56-46 win over McNair Stockton in a NorCal Division II first-round game on March 6.

  • Kaleo Johnson, Encinal baseball -- Johnson pitched a complete-game two-hitter with seven strikeouts and also drove in a run and scored in the Jets' 6-1 nonleague victory over El Cerrito on March 8.

  • Temidayo Yussuf, St. Joseph Notre Dame boys basketball -- Yussuf produced 24 points in the Pilots 65-40 win over Liberty Christian-Redding in a Northern California Regional Division V quarterfinal game on March 9.
