MORGAN HILL -- A teenage driver and a police cruiser collided at a major intersection Thursday evening, sending the patrol car across lanes and into a pair of vehicles stopped at a red light.

The crash happened just after 9 p.m. at Monterey Road and Tennant Avenue, in an area of strip malls. Police said a 16-year-old driver in a Nissan XTerra was going west on Tennant while the officer headed south on Monterey when they collided. The officer's car then went into the eastbound lanes of W. Edmundson Avenue and hit a Toyota Camry and Ford Expedition.

The patrol car and Nissan were both badly damaged, while the two other cars were able to drive away from the scene.

The teenage driver and the officer were taken to St. Louise Hospital and released later the same night.

The California Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. There is no indication that drugs or alcohol played a role in the accident. Anyone with information is asked to call the CHP at 408-848-2324.
