Saint Mary's mission seems impossible. From the First Four to the Final Four? It can't be done, you say.

Oh, but it can.

In fact, it has.

Two years ago, Virginia Commonwealth opened NCAA tournament play in the First Four and charged all the way to the Final Four, eliminating the Nos. 1, 3 and 6 seeds along the way and leaving thousands of busted brackets in its wake.

To duplicate the feat, Saint Mary's will have to win five games in 13 days and, most likely, take out the Nos. 1, 2 and 3 seeds in the Midwest region (Louisville, Duke and Michigan State).

After learning their fate on Selection Sunday and taking a pre-dawn flight to Dayton, Ohio, the Gaels must beat Middle Tennessee State on Tuesday, then win twice in Auburn Hills, Mich., and survive Sweet 16 and Elite Eight games in Indianapolis.

Ridiculous to consider?

Impossible to accomplish?

That's what everyone said about VCU, too.
