Martinez -- Former Assemblyman Joe Canciamilla of Pittsburg was formally appointed Tuesday as Contra Costa County's next clerk-recorder and registrar of voters.

Canciamilla will succeed Steve Weir, who retires March 29 after holding the post nearly 25 years. The board of supervisors initially chose Canciamilla, a former state lawmaker, one-time supervisor, Pittsburg councilman and school board trustee after conducting interviews in February.

The new clerk-recorder will take the oath of office on April 1 and earn $150,000 a year. If he wants to keep the job, Canciamilla will have to run and win in 2014.

Among his new tasks, the lawyer and Pittsburg Funeral Chapel owner will run the county's elections and oversee a host of document recording services such as deeds, birth and marriage certificates. He will also become the county's civil marriage commissioner.
