SAN JOSE -- A pedestrian was struck and killed by a northbound passenger train near the Tamien station shortly after 4 p.m. Tuesday, according to Caltrain officials.
The person was on the tracks near Virginia Street when they were struck by Caltrain No. 263, which had just departed the station with a single passenger on board.
Caltrain spokeswoman Jayme Ackermann said the person who was struck appeared to be male, but no additional information was immediately available. She said the person was struck "near a pedestrian crossing but not at a crossing."
Trains are able to use a single track to get through the area, but passengers traveling south of the Diridon Station should expect some delays because of necessary speed reductions.
It was the third fatality on the Caltrain corridor this year, Ackermann said.
