HAYWARD -- A truck traveling on Hayward's one-way downtown traffic loop hit and injured a motorcyclist Tuesday afternoon, a fire department official said.
Both the truck and the motorcyclist were driving west on A Street when the truck made a turn and hit the front of the motorcycle, sending the biker to the ground, said Hayward Fire Capt. Thor Poulsen.
The driver broke his right leg and fractured his left elbow, Poulsen said.
The truck driver stopped at the scene and was cooperative, Poulsen said. Hayward police on the scene said it appears the 3:40 p.m. collision was an accident.
The motorcyclist was taken to Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley, Poulsen said. His condition was not immediately known. The truck driver was not injured, he said.
The new loop opened last Friday night after six years of planning and construction. Hayward city officials hope the loop will untangle long-snarled traffic but there are concerns that it will -- at least temporarily -- confuse motorists. Tuesday's incident was not related to the change in traffic patterns, police said.
