ANTIOCH -- A 20-year-old Antioch man was shot and killed early Wednesday afternoon near G Street, police said.
The shooting occurred at 12:22 p.m. at the intersection of William Reed Drive and West Madill Street, Antioch police Lt. Diane Aguinaga said. Police did not immediately identify the victim, who was shot multiple times, and no suspect information was released.
Antioch resident Lisa Vieira said her 78-year-old father-in-law heard a strange noise outside his home on William Reed and looked outside to see the "white blur" of a car speeding off, and in its wake, a body laying in the street.
Andrew Ortega, a friend of the victim dating back to grade school, said the 20-year-old graduated from Antioch High. He was looking to enlist in the Marines, Ortega said.
The victim's mother was visibly distraught as she stood briefly at the scene and left soon after to speak with detectives at the police department.
Ortega said he heard word of a confrontation outside of the QuikStop Market at 1108 Sycamore Drive earlier, with the victim refusing to give up his money.
"He was like my brother," Ortega said. "He doesn't deserve to get shot three times."
Police cordoned off the crime scene on Madill from G Street to William Reed. There was no immediate word of anyone else being injured in the shooting.
Nearby schools -- Marsh Elementary, Antioch Middle and Antioch High -- were not put on lockdown, though district personnel were placed on the street corner to help guide the kids around the scene or answer any questions, Superintendent Donald Gill said.
Wednesday's killing marked the second homicide of 2013 in the city of Antioch.
