Michelle Shocked is backing off anti-gay comments she made Sunday night during a show in San Francisco, saying she was misunderstood.

Of course, how could anyone misunderstand someone saying, "I live in fear that the world will be destroyed if gays are allowed to marry," and, "You can go on Twitter and say 'Michelle Shocked says God hates (slur for homosexuals).'" That darned media.

In a statement sent to Fox News and other news outlets, the 51-year-old singer said "I do not, nor have I ever, said or believed that God hates homosexuals (or anyone else). I said that some of His followers believe that," she stated.

Uh-huh.

"When I said... 'Michelle Shocked says God hates (slur for homosexuals),' I was predicting the absurd way my description of, my apology for, the intolerant would no doubt be misinterpreted," she said.

Of course. It's the fault of all those insulted people who heard her and walked out of the show.

"But I am damn sorry," she said. "If I could repeat the evening, I would make a clearer distinction between a set of beliefs I abhor, and my human sympathy for the folks who hold them."

This backtracking may have something to do with how many venues and festivals have canceled Shocked's concerts. So far, clubs in Novato, Santa Cruz, Boulder, Colo. and Chicago have all canceled her shows, as has the Telluride Bluegrass Festival.
