A three-hour standoff and brief gun battle Wednesday between police and a man barricaded in a Vallejo home ended with the suspect's death.

The incident began just after noon, when police received reports of an agitated man in his 50s or 60s waving a rifle and yelling obscenities at a house in the 1800 block of Sutter Street, Vallejo Lt. Kenny Park said at the scene.

When officers arrived, the man became hostile and refused to come out of the house. Police repeatedly tried to communicate with him through both a telephone and a loudspeaker.

However, the man threatened to shoot and kill people as he talked on the phone with police, Park said.

As the standoff continued, police established a perimeter around the house, moving residents and others about a block away in every direction while officers stayed behind an armored vehicle. At one point residents of a house across the street were evacuated inside an armored van.
