ANTIOCH -- As authorities identified an Antioch man slain on a city street Wednesday afternoon, two other men shot a few hours later were expected to recover, police said.

Contra Costa Coroner's deputies identified the dead man as 20-year-old Nicholas Barton Chavez. He died in a hail of gunfire that broke out at 12:22 p.m. at the intersection of William Reed Drive and West Madill Street, Antioch police Lt. Diane Aguinaga said.

Police said they have no suspects in the shooting, nor would they say if it was gang-related. A friend of Chavez's said the man was shot three times. The killing was Antioch's second homicide in 2013.

Hours after that shooting, two other people were wounded by gunfire about 6:45 p.m. in the 2300 block of Manzanita Way, Aguinaga said. Both victims were expected to survive, she said.

Police did not say if they believe the shootings are connected. A hostile crowd surrounded police after the shooting and hindered their ability to look for and help the victims, Aguinaga said. The crowd fought with officers, screamed at them and tried to keep one of them from getting near the victims, she said.

Neither of the shooting victims cooperated with police. One was taken to a hospital in an ambulance and another was driven by onlookers, Aguinaga said.
