MARTINEZ -- A 21-year-old inmate from Pleasanton is currently in intensive care following a suicide attempt Thursday afternoon, a sheriff's office spokesperson said.
At 2:54 p.m., paramedics were called for an inmate in the intake area of the Martinez Detention Facility, said Contra Costa County Sheriff's Office spokesman Jimmy Lee.
A sheriff's deputy found the 21-year-old inmate, whose identity was not released, unresponsive.
It appeared that the inmate, a resident of Pleasanton, tried to commit suicide, Lee said. Medical staff at the jail began life-saving measures before the inmate was transported to the Contra Costa Regional Medical Center where they are currently in intensive care.
Lee did not specify how the inmate had attempted suicide, nor say why they were being held in jail.
