SAN ANTONIO -- The SaberCats opened their Arena Football League season by knocking off the San Antonio Talons 47-42 on Saturday night at the Alamodome before 8,161 fans.
The SaberCats' new quarterback, Aaron Garcia, completed 23 of 36 passes for 264 yards and five touchdowns, giving him 1,201 for his 17-season career. Wide receiver Huey Whittaker caught four touchdown passes and also scored on an interception return.
San Jose struck first as Garcia found Whittaker in the back of the end zone for a 3-yard score midway through the first quarter.
Whittaker scored twice more, on a pass from 6 yards out and on a 45-yard interception return, to give the SaberCats a 20-0 lead.
San Antonio took a 42-41 lead as John Dutton hit Dwayne Eley Jr. from 7 yards out. But SaberCats wide receiver Jamarko Simmons dove in from the 1 with 52 seconds to play for the winning score.
