HALF MOON BAY -- Rescue crews are searching for a 22-year-old man who disappeared from a beach in Half Moon Bay, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

Officers from the Coast Guard were called about 2:43 p.m. on Sunday to assist the San Mateo Fire Department and the Pillar Point harbor master with the search after the man's friends said they were playing football with him, turned around and he was gone, said Officer Mark Leahey.

A witness told officers that they watched the man enter the water, then disappear.

The Coast Guard sent out a helicopter from San Francisco at 2:48 p.m.

As of 4:45 p.m., the man still had not been found, Leahey said.
