The rainbow pride flag is being flown this week at city halls in Hayward and Alameda city halls in support of those seeking to overturn California's Proposition 8 and the Defense of Marriage Act.
Hayward and Alameda join Oakland, San Leandro and Berkeley in flying the flag in support of marriage equality. The rainbow flag is a symbol affirming the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people.
On Tuesday, the U.S. Supreme Court will hear a challenge to the constitutionality of the 2008 Prop. 8 ban on same-sex marriage. On Wednesday, oral arguments are scheduled before the court on a challenge to the denial of benefits for legally married gay and lesbian couples under the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act.
