FREMONT -- A registered sex offender was behind bars Wednesday after police say he lifted a Fremont high school student's skirt as she walked home from school.

Marcos Pereda, 28, of Fremont, was arrested on suspicion of attempted sexual assault after the Monday incident, police spokeswoman Geneva Bosques said.

Officers were dispatched at 3:15 p.m. to the intersection of Sundale Drive and Nelson Street for a report of a possible sexual battery, Bosques said.

When police arrived, the 17-year-old student told officers that a man -- who police later identified as Pereda -- was walking behind her, then grabbed her skirt and lifted it. The girl told police she yelled, and the man ran off.

The girl said she did not know the man, Bosques said. She gave police a description.

On Tuesday, resource officers from the girl's high school assisted detectives in the investigation, and officers soon identified the suspect as a registered sex offender who lived in the area.

Police then went to the suspect's house, arrested him and transported him to the Santa Rita Jail. Jail records showed him still in custody Wednesday.

Pereda is on probation for committing a lewd act in public and for indecent exposure in 2007, 2008 and 2010 in Fremont, Bosques said.
