OAKLAND -- A person died after being hit by a BART train at the 12th Street Oakland City Center station Wednesday, a BART spokeswoman said.
BART officials were notified about 9:10 a.m. Wednesday that a person was struck by a Richmond-bound train and was trapped under it, spokeswoman Alicia Trost said on the agency's information line. The person, whose gender was not immediately known, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Platform 3 in the station was shut down until 12:09 p.m., affecting trains heading to Pittsburg/Bay Point and Richmond from San Francisco, Trost said.
The body was removed by the Alameda County coroner and an autopsy will determine the cause of death. Foul play does not appear to have occurred, Trost said.
