SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO -- Caltrain service was temporarily halted Saturday night after emergency crews were called to clean up a fuel spill near the city's passenger station.

As many as 400 gallons of fuel may have leaked from a southbound train after it struck some debris on the tracks between the Bayshore and South San Francisco stations shortly before 7:30 p.m., according to a Caltrain spokeswoman.

At least one other train was delayed while the area was being cleared. Service through the area was restored late Saturday, but trains were not stopping at the South San Francisco station.
