OAKLAND -- A 12-year-old boy on a bicycle was arrested Monday morning after police said he stole items from two women downtown and then pedalled away.

An officer saw the second theft and followed and arrested the youth who was identified as the thief by the victims, police said.

His name was not released because of his age.

The first theft happened about 9:16 a.m. when a woman at the intersection of 21st and Webster streets had her iPhone snatched from her hand. The suspect escaped on a bicycle.

About 10:15 a.m. a woman outside a hotel at 10th Street and Broadway had what turned out to be an empty shopping bag grabbed from her by the same youth, who apparently thought there were items inside, police said. The youth then pedalled away westbound on 10th Street.

An officer saw that theft and followed the youth in his car before arresting him on 10th Street near Clay Street.

The youth still had the empty bag but not the iPhone, police said.

He was arrested on suspicion of theft.

Police were investigating if the youth might be responsible for similar thefts in the downtown area.
