FREMONT -- Authorities have identified the 74-year-old man killed last week in a dispute with his estranged daughter, and the daughter has been charged with murder in the brutal slaying.

Officers responding to a domestic dispute about 7:15 p.m. on Thursday found Navarro Esquerra, 74, lying in a puddle of blood on the kitchen floor of a home in the 37800 block of Argyle Road, in the close-knit neighborhood of Glenmoor. Esquerra lay unresponsive and bleeding from the head, a victim of apparent blunt force trauma.

The man's daughter, Megan O'Connell, 29, was arrested at the home about 15 minutes later and taken to Santa Rita Jail on suspicion of murder.

On Monday she appeared before a judge at the Fremont Hall of Justice and was arraigned on a murder charge in connection with Esquerra's death, said police spokeswoman Geneva Bosques. She was being held without bail, court records show.

Police said Esquerra's wife called police and told officers that O'Connell was at the house in violation of a restraining order and that she had hit her father over the head with an unknown object during an argument. Police would not say what the object was.

O'Connell was still at the house when police arrived, and she briefly struggled with officers before they arrested her, police said. Esquerra was taken to a local trauma center, where he was pronounced dead.
