ANTIOCH -- A purse snatcher became an unintended target of police attention after he ran away from officers responding to an armed robbery call Wednesday, police said.

At 1:48 p.m., an Antioch police officer and his dog arrived at the Deer Valley Plaza Shopping Center on the 4400 block of Lone Tree Way for a possible armed robbery, according to Lt. Tammany Brooks.

When the officer arrived, witnesses in the parking lot pointed to a man fleeing the scene on foot, according to Brooks.

Though the officer ordered the man to stop, he kept running, so the officer set his K-9 unit out to stop the man.

The dog bit the man in the arm and brought him to the ground, and the man, a 20-year-old Oakley resident, was taken into custody.

However, Antioch police discovered the man was not the armed robbery suspect but rather someone who had snatched a shopper's purse as they were leaving a store at the shopping center, Brooks said.

Police are still investigating the report of the attempted armed robbery.

The Oakley man who was bit by the dog was taken to a hospital for treatment before he was arrested on suspicion of grand theft, among other charges.
