SAN LUIS OBISPO -- Prosecutors say a California man who tried to smother a 90-year-old woman with an American flag has pleaded no contest to attempted murder.

The San Luis Obispo Tribune (http://bit.ly/YMyTce) reported Wednesday that 26-year-old Brennen Fulfer will receive a 13-year prison sentence under the plea deal.

According to court testimony, Fulfer had been entertaining homicidal fantasies for weeks in 2009 before breaking into the mobile home of 90-year-old Mildred Maddelein, beating her then attempting to smother her with an American flag before choking her until she lost consciousness.

Police say Fulfer appeared at the San Luis Obispo Police Department and said "I think I just killed someone," directing officers to the house of Maddelein, who he did not know.

Maddelein survived the attack, but has since died for unrelated reasons.
