"Wicked" will finally float into the South Bay, my pretties!
The insanely popular "Wizard of Oz" prequel, which made its world premiere in San Francisco in 2003 before becoming a Broadway juggernaut, will run for three weeks as part of the 2013-2014 Broadway San Jose series.
Based on Gregory McGuire's novel, the Tony-winning musical traces the untold story of the wicked witch of the west, Elphaba. The iconic musical has become a tween magnet, turning a whole new generation onto the magic of Broadway. "Wicked" will run Aug. 27-Sept. 14, 2014.
Local theater buffs will also be thrilled that the Tony-winning "Jersey Boys" will also make its local debut. Perhaps the most charming jukebox musical ever, this infectiously warm and witty tale of the Four Seasons will run July 15-20, 2014. Among the chart-topping hits it celebrates are "Big Girls Don't Cry," "Sherry," "December 1963 (Oh, What A Night)," Can't Take My Eyes Off You" and "Working My Way Back to You"
Other highlights in the roster include the regional premiere of the cheeky "Priscilla Queen of the Desert" (Oct. 29-November 2) which is based on the hit 1994 flick; the revival of "Evita" (Nov. 19-24); the music of the knight, "The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber" with all the composer's hits from "Phantom of the Opera" to "Cats" and "Jesus Christ Superstar" (May 27-June 1, 2014); and a kitschy new Bee Gees tribute called "The Australian Bee Gees Show" (February 4-9, 2014).
All show are at the San Jose Center for the Performing Arts. Season tickets are $197-$489, wwww.broadwaysanjose.com or 866-395-2929. Single tickets will go on sale later this year.
