SAN LEANDRO -- Local teenagers looking to learn about the life and job of a police officer are invited to apply for one of 24 spots in the 2013 Teen Police Academy.

The academy will be held this summer from June 25 to Aug. 8 on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2 to 5 p.m., except July 4 and Aug. 6.

Eligible applicants must be 14 to 18 years of age, and live, work or go to school in San Leandro.

Academy participants will learn about patrol operations, traffic enforcement, criminal investigations, SWAT, the police canine unit and other duties. Teens will also get to go on a ride along with an officer, police said.

Those interested can obtain an application from the San Leandro Police Department or from academy coordinator Sandy Colwell, who can be reached at 510-577-3248 or by email at scolwell@sanleandro.org. Applicants must submit a one-page essay about their interest in the program, five references and other information requested.

Applications will be accepted until 24 qualified applicants are selected.
