SAN MATEO -- A post office was evacuated Tuesday due to a suspicious backpack a motorcyclist tossed on the ground near the building's parking lot and drove off, police said.

The bag that landed on the sidewalk at 1630 South Delaware St. around 9:05 a.m. turned out to be harmless, said San Mateo police Sgt. Dave Norris. Police haven't found the person on the motorcycle, so it remained unclear why the bag was left at the post office.

Police called in the county bomb squad after a citizen saw the motorcyclist throw the bag onto the sidewalk and leave. Officers evacuated the post office and sealed off the area.

The bomb squad robot dragged the backpack across the street to an evacuated car wash, where authorities decided it "wasn't a threat," said Norris. It was over in about an hour.

Anyone with information about the motorcycle rider can call San Mateo police at 650-522-7700.
