OAKLAND -- An inert grenade spotted lying in the street early Friday in East Oakland was recovered by Alameda County bomb squad, police said.

The grenade was discovered by a passerby about 3:43 a.m. in the 1400 block of 48th Avenue and reported to Oakland police. International Boulevard between 47th and 55th avenues was closed to traffic for about two hours during the investigation.

The vintage of the grenade was not released. Police said the device was not blown up, but taken away by the Alameda County Sheriff's Explosive Ordnance Disposal Squad.
