The SUV, carrying 5 people, was heading south about a half-mile from Redwood Road when it drifted into the center divider. The driver overcorrected and flipped the SUV, which landed back on its wheels facing the wrong way. A female passenger was ejected and was found dead on arrival by emergency personnel. Four passengers were transported to Highland Hospital by ambulance.

OAKLAND -- One woman is dead and two others are seriously injured in an overturned vehicle crash on southbound Highway 13, the California Highway Patrol reported.

CHP and emergency crews were called to the scene, between Lincoln Avenue overpass and Redwood Road, around 3:45 p.m.

One woman, between 70 and 80 years old, was ejected from the vehicle, a white Toyota Sequoia SUV, and declared dead when firefighters arrived. The male driver was transported to Highland Hospital in Oakland in critical condition. Two other passengers were injured, including one who suffered major injuries and a woman who received minor cuts on her forehead. A fifth person in the vehicle was uninjured.

It is unclear if anyone else was ejected from the SUV.

Witnesses told CHP officers that the SUV drifted out of its lane and struck the center divide. The driver then overcorrected, causing the vehicle to flip over and then land upright again on its wheels, but facing traffic.

Traffic is backed up to at least Highway 24, and heavy delays are expected, the CHP said.
