ALAMEDA -- A kitchen fire caused $5,000 dollars in damage after the homeowners were able to extinguish the blaze Saturday evening, firefighters said.

At 6:09 p.m., Alameda firefighters responded to the call in an apartment on the 2000 block of Otis Drive.

The resident, who was not identified, put out the fire just as firefighters arrived at the complex.

Firefighters checked for any hidden fire before ensuring that the unit was safe.

In all, 18 Alameda firefighters responded to the scene. No injuries were reported, and the fire damage was limited to the kitchen and is estimated at $5,000.

The investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.
