BURLINGAME -- An off-duty Berkeley police officer was stabbed and three others injured in a brawl late Saturday involving up to 60 people outside a birthday party at a nightclub, police said.

The 30-year-old officer was trying to break up the fighting in front of the Vinyl Room at 221 Park Road when he was stabbed, Burlingame police Sgt. Don Shepley said. Police haven't made any arrests and the officer was in stable condition Monday.

The fighting started around 11:58 p.m. Saturday between some party goers and a group of about 10 men who'd been denied entry. The would-be party crashers had been hanging out across the street from the Vinyl Room when some words were exchanged with people leaving the party. It's unclear who threw the first punch, but the verbal dispute quickly turned violent, Shepley said.

The officer, who was a guest, was among about 40 party goers who ended up in the middle of the brawl, Shepley said. He didn't identify himself as a police officer and was just trying to break up the violence when he was stabbed. Friends rushed him to the hospital for treatment.

During the melee a 29-year-old San Bruno woman, who was at the party, was hit by a flying bottle. A man, 31, and woman, 32, from Emeryville also complained of being kicked and punched. These three people weren't taken to the hospital, Shepley said.
