Big inning helps Head-Royce pull away

  • The Head-Royce High baseball team scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to erase a 1-0 deficit and blow open its Bay Counties League-East game against Bentley on April 26, which Head-Royce won 8-1. Michael Greenfield belted a three-run home run in the fourth inning. Teammate Reid Gibbs went 3 for 4 at the plate, including a double.

    Alameda shuts out visiting Berkeley

  • The Alameda High baseball team scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning and made that score stand up in a West Alameda County Conference victory on April 26. Chris Scyphers pitched the first six innings for Alameda, allowing six hits and only one walk. Matt Esparza finished up in the seventh for the save. Alex Vick was 2 for 3 with an RBI, and teammate Jesse Lewis was 1 for 3 with a run scored for Alameda.

    Delaney stifles Pinole Valley with 4-hitter

  • The El Cerrito High baseball team used a four-hit shutout by pitcher Ryan Delaney and a game-winning RBI by Aiden Bernal to defeat Pinole Valley 1-0 on April 26. Delaney struck out two and walked two on the mound, and was 1 for 3 at the plate with a stolen base in this Tri-County Athletic League game. Adarius Pickett was also 1 for 3 with a stolen base for El Cerrito.

  • Oakland Tech vs. Bishop O'Dowd, baseball, Oakland Coliseum, May 4, 10 a.m. -- A couple of Oakland teams face each other on Oakland's best field in a nonleague game.

  • Channing Nesbitt, Bishop O'Dowd baseball -- The Washington-bound Nesbitt threw a one-hitter with nine strikeouts in the Dragons' 5-2 victory over Castro Valley on April 26.

  • Ryan Wi, Skyline baseball -- Wi threw a no-hitter in the Titans' 15-0 five-inning victory over Castlemont on April 24.

  • Brandon Alcala, Encinal baseball -- Alcala was 3 for 4 at the plate with two RBI and three stolen bases in the Jets' 8-3 loss to Arroyo on April 26.

  • Ryan Delaney, El Cerrito baseball -- The 6-foot-2 senior improved his pitching record to 5-1 this season with a 1-0 complete-game victory over Pinole Valley on April 26.

  • Jack Keane, St. Joseph Notre Dame boys volleyball -- The freshman slammed eight kills in the Pilots' 25-12, 25-17, 25-21 Tri-County Athletic League victory over Hercules on April 23.

  • Jesse Lewis, Alameda baseball -- Lewis pitched four innings of shutout ball in the Hornets' 5-4 win over Berkeley on April 24. He also was 1 for 3 with a run scored in Alameda's 2-0 victory over Berkeley on April 26.

  • Devin Mahoney, St. Mary's baseball -- Mahoney slammed a first-inning solo home run and also had two walks in the Panthers' 2-0 win over St. Patrick-St. Vincent on April 26. He also allowed no runs in six innings on the mound with eight strikeouts and was 1 for 1 for 3 with four RBI in St. Mary's 6-2 victory over Albany on April 24.
