RICHMOND -- Three people suffered life-threatening injuries after their car hit the center divider on westbound Interstate 80 and rolled several times, according to Contra Costa Fire Protection District officials.
Authorities responded to the accident at 3:53 p.m., just west of the El Portal Drive offramp. Two of the three people in the car, who have not been identified, were airlifted to a nearby hospital, and the third was taken by a ground ambulance, according to fire district Battalion Chief Bryan Craig.
California Highway Patrol officers were investigating the possibility that the crash could have been caused by a hit-and-run driver.
A section of the freeway was closed during an investigation, but lanes have since all reopened.
